Weekly Highlights
On Wednesday, our Year 12 IB French students attended the opening ceremony to kick off Francophonie 2026 at the Hong Kong Central Library. Our students honed their advanced listening skills by navigating professional French registers and complex cultural themes. The day concluded with a social lunch, where students put their speaking skills to the test in a relaxed, authentic setting.
We look forward to our WIS Francophone Week from 16 to 20 March.
On Wednesday, our Year 12 IBDP Chemistry students witnessed the dramatic "whoosh bottle” demonstration, showcasing the rapid energy release when ethanol fuel combusts. The experiment brought classroom theory to life, sparking discussion on fuels, energy transfer, and the science behind everyday energy sources.
Eight WISustain students from Years 7, 9, and 11 recently participated in the ESF ESG Symposium hosted by Sha Tin College.
This was a fantastic opportunity for our learners to deepen their understanding of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles while collaborating on ideas for a more sustainable future. Beyond the environmental focus, the event allowed students to sharpen their leadership and communication skills in a professional setting.
Looking ahead, WISustain will lead the charge in exploring how we, as a whole school community, can continue to build a more sustainable environment.
On Wednesday, our students brought old clothing into the Fashion & Textiles space and transformed it into bags. Well done to our fashionistas for embracing the practice of sustainability.
Recently, our Class of 2015 alumna Mia Upton, an established sustainable textile designer, returned to campus. Mia graduated from the Royal College of Art with a Master of Arts in Textiles, and she has since built a career centered on innovative, eco-conscious design and a strong commitment to sustainability.
Students enthusiastic about Visual Arts, Fashion, and Textiles gathered in our studio to hear about Mia’s journey into the global design scene. During her visit, she shared how her time at our school laid the foundation for her creative path, inspiring our current students to explore the intersection of artistry and materiality.
Check out our recent video to find out how enthusiastic our students are in the Visual Arts learning space.
Our WIS runners competed really well against the best running schools in Hong Kong at Tuesday's HKSSF Cross Country championships.
Competing in the elite HKSSF Division 1, West Island School’s performance should be viewed in the context of the highest level of youth cross country in Hong Kong. WIS achieved an outstanding result as the highest-ranked international school, surpassed only by large prestigious local schools that offer specialised sports scholarships.
Several runners ran course personal bests, rewarding themselves for effective training, and the overall team results showcase the depth of our running. As always, the team morale was exceptional, supporting each other and demanding high standards.
