Weekly Highlights and Latest News
On Tuesday, West Island School was honoured to host the 10th Spanish Speech Competition for the third consecutive year. Our auditorium welcomed Island School, King George V School (KGV) and South Island School for a spectacular showcase of talent.
Huge congratulations go to our own participants who put on a fantastic show. They thoroughly impressed the judges with their solo and pair plays, an upbeat Merengue dance and a brilliant jazz music performance. The entire competition was energetic and inviting, ending with lively audience participation during the finale dance.
A massive thank you goes to our European Languages team for their exceptional effort in organising and bringing this wonderful celebration of culture to life, as well as the Creative Arts Faculty for their fantastic performance with our jazz band.
Well done to all the students who won awards and achieved their personal bests on the day.
Our second annual Greater Bay Area (GBA) High Tech and Culture Trip (17–20 June) saw student participation nearly double to 48 students. Extending our Technology and Chinese curriculum, this year’s upgraded itinerary featured visits to tech giants Tencent, Baidu and BYD.
Embodying the IB Learner Profile, our students confidently navigated visits in Mandarin and Cantonese, asked probing questions, and even designed their own apps. They brilliantly explored how cutting-edge innovation can preserve cultural heritage. A huge thank you to our Technology and Chinese departments for this inspiring cross-faculty collaboration.
Artwork by nine West Island School students has been selected for this year's ESF Art Exhibition. The exciting variety of mediums on display includes 3D-printed sculptures, futuristic paintings, hanging installations, digital art, and intricate drawings. Well done to our talented WIS artists.

A sincere thank you to the West Island School community for coming together so brilliantly for our fourth annual Blood Drive. It was wonderful to see students, staff and parents unite for such an important cause, successfully donating a fantastic total of 82 units of blood to help save lives across Hong Kong.
In recognition of this continued commitment, West Island School was also honoured with an Elite Partnership Award from the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service for our ongoing support of blood drives in secondary schools. This achievement is a testament to the generosity of everyone who rolled up their sleeves and supported the event - thank you for making a real difference.
This week, our Year 10 French students demonstrated academic excellence during a superb debating showcase. Exploring the rigorous format of public speaking, they diligently prepared their arguments, skillfully anticipating points of information and crafting sharp counterarguments. The event was a wonderful celebration of the students' impressive progress and achievements.
467 students across Years 7 to 10 shared their feedback through the recent Student Voice survey, highlighting both positive achievements and areas for future growth. We look forward to continuing to work closely with our student body to leverage these insights and make our school community even better next year.
On Thursday, we held celebratory Pre-16 and Post-16 Assemblies to recognise our students' incredible talent, effort and achievements.
During the Pre-16 Assembly, students put on fantastic performances and proudly received their Learner Profile Awards and Platinum Awards. Our Post-16 Assembly celebrated our Year 12 awardees, recognising both the "Most Accomplished" and "Most Improved" students.
Our Post-16 Assembly celebrated our Year 12 awardees, recognising both the "Most Accomplished" and "Most Improved" students.
On Tuesday afternoon, our staff room hosted a networking session between our alumni and current students.
Students had the wonderful opportunity to discuss the next steps in their education while receiving valuable, firsthand insights from those who walked the path before them. Our alumni thoroughly enjoyed a school tour led by our student ambassadors and loved reconnecting with their former teachers and staff.
The Individuals & Societies (I&S) Magazine team is thrilled to share their second edition, themed "Pale Blue Dot". This student-led publication beautifully showcases how our Humanities curriculum teaches young people about human unity, global perspective, and humility. Inside, you’ll find insightful articles from both students and teachers exploring big world ideas. We hope you enjoy reading.
Well done to our I&S Magazine secretariat, Brianna, Sophia and Martha.
Last week marked the final week of Term 3 CAS. Through a mix of student-led, teacher-led, and externally provided experiences, our students had the chance to explore an incredible range of opportunities to find their purpose and realise their potential. One of the wonderful aspects of CAS is how it allows our older students to develop their leadership skills by planning and delivering experiences for younger students. It is always lovely to see students of different age groups interacting with and supporting one another.
On Thursday, our World Scholar's Cup students departed for Kuala Lumpur for the World Scholar’s Cup Global Round. We are incredibly proud of their hard work qualifying for this prestigious event and wish them the very best of luck.
The painting of three new murals in our 8/F Science Corridor is now complete. These curated pieces provide a visually engaging backdrop that bridges academic concepts with real-world issues. By highlighting global challenges, the artwork encourages our students to think critically about how their daily scientific studies impact the wider world around them. Well done to all the students involved in this fantastic initiative.
A group of students produced a beautiful colouring book under the theme of "Marine Life". While practising mindfulness by creating the illustrations, they proved to be great inquirers as they thought carefully about which designs would best reflect this term's focus. They hope to share their artwork with the school community for anyone who is interested in using them to practice mindfulness during the summer break.
Last Thursday, five ESF schools gathered in our Sports Hall for a fantastic Learning Centre (LC) Summer Festival. It was a fun-filled festival of challenges, games, and interactive activities. The atmosphere was incredibly vibrant, full of joy as we celebrated our students' courage, resilience, and the incredible journey of their learning over the past year.

Last Saturday, a group of Year 12 students hosted a sports day event for students from IBEL in our Sports Hall.
IBEL supports ethnic minority students facing financial and language barriers in local public schools, helping them unlock better future opportunities.
This team of Year 12 students, along with participants from their CAS activity, have dedicated themselves to weekly volunteering at the IBEL center in Jordan over the past academic year. This sports day event aimed to provide a more holistic education for these students, whose access to regular physical activity is often limited.
Well done to Aiken, Ashutosh, Ishina, Keira, Rochelle and Sophie.
The 2025-2026 academic year has been another extraordinary year of participation and achievement in sports at West Island School.
We had more than half of our student population proudly representing the school across over 65 teams in competitive sports, playing in more than 430 fixtures throughout the school year.
Beyond competitive squads, our student community also actively participated in sporting activities through Creative, Activity, Service (CAS). With over 60 hours of weekly activities across 14 different sports, our campus has been a non-stop hub of energy.
Congratulations to every student who got involved, stayed active, and showed incredible school spirit through sports this year.
