Weekly Highlights
Our exciting Inter-Dynasty Basketball series started this week with enthusiastic participation from Years 9 and 10. We look forward to seeing more of our students' energy on the court next week.
On Monday, six of our fantastic Year 7 Ambassadors, accompanied by Mrs Woosey, led a transition presentation for Kennedy School Year 6 students.
Our ambassadors provided an authentic "day in the life" perspective of West Island School, covering everything from navigating the campus and mastering the canteen to an introduction to our House/Dynasty system. They also shared insights into the exciting world of Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), making new friends, tackling new subjects and the much-anticipated Year 7 Camp.
The presentation concluded with a lively Q&A session, which was warmly received by the Year 6 cohort. The questions were insightful, and our ambassadors handled them with maturity and confidence. That same evening, they delivered the same presentation to students joining us from various other primary schools and their parents. Speaking in front of a room full of adults and new peers, our ambassadors represented West Island School with incredible poise and enthusiasm.
A huge well done to our Year 7 Ambassadors for their dedication and for being such excellent role models. Reflecting on the event, Mrs Woosey noted: "Our ambassadors did a brilliant job bridging the gap between primary and secondary. Their honesty and passion for our school community really helped put the new families at ease."
On Thursday, our Years 7 and 8 students stepped into the shoes of a legendary explorer as Benedict Allen shared the incredible story of his solo journey across the Amazon basin.
Our students engaged their curiosity and critical thinking to imagine a world without GPS, where 3,600 miles of unforgiving jungle required constant problem-solving. Throughout the session, the students drew direct connections between Benedict’s survival and the IB Learner Profile attributes they practice in their own classrooms - identifying how risk-taking, resilience and being an open-minded inquirer are essential both in the heart of the Amazon and in their own learning journeys.
On Friday, our Lower School attended a student-led assembly on digital safety. Students and teachers from South Island School shared an impactful, in-house film and hosted a peer-to-peer Q&A. The session explored the personal and community risks of digital forgery, encouraging our students to navigate the online world with responsibility and critical thinking.
In our recent Book Character Dress-up Day, our learning spaces were filled with the stories we love. It’s clear that a passion for literature runs deep in our community—our teachers and staff stepped straight out of the pages alongside our students.
This photo album highlights the amazing dress-ups, the creative DIY costumes and the incredible school spirit that made the day so special.
Building on the growing reading confidence we’ve seen during Book Week, our Year 9 students spent time exploring physical newspapers supplied by our library.
Our Year 9 students have been focusing on student-led inquiry-based service learning to identify community needs and take action to make a positive impact. At the final stage of their group projects in Term 3, students showcased their collaborative skills and applied research to real-world issues, confidently presenting their actions and reflections.
On Wednesday, our Year 10 students participated in the UKBC, an online biology challenge designed to test their classroom knowledge, general interest in the subject and problem-solving skills.
While we look forward to receiving their results, we are proud to see our students' keen focus on working out complex biological problems during the challenge.
Year 12 student Haidi has been honoured with the Outstanding Athlete Award for the second half of 2025. In April, Haidi reached the Top 16 at the Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships in Rio de Janeiro. Notably, she was the only athlete from Asia to break into the Top 16 in her category—a testament to her world-class skill.
Well done to Haidi! Her resilience in navigating the many challenges of her athletic journey is an inspiration to our school community.
Year 10 student Marcus brought home two gold medals from his recent swimming competitions:
Gold in Boys (Aged 13–14) 100m Individual Medley at the Age Group Short Course Swimming Competition (Division III).
Gold in Boys (Aged 13–14) 100m Breaststroke at the Age Group Long Course Swimming Competition (Division II).
