Dear West Island community,

This past Tuesday at noon, the 19 students you see in the photo above gathered to discuss their upcoming service projects centering around ways to feed those in need in Hong Kong. They were specifically discussing a food drive called Foodie Fridays with Ms. Ravenscroft, Head of Year 13, and Ms. Gilbert, Head of CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service). The fact that they chose to use their lunchtime to contribute–with the goal of providing service to other people–shows how much our students are practising being caring– a Learner Profile attribute.

They also came up with the slogan “CANpaign”, for the food drive on Friday, Oct. 13, when they will ask the community to bring canned food. They aim to collect 1,000 canned food items, with each can costing less than 10 HKD, that will be donated with the help of Food Angel, a local charity.

We’d like to thank Ms. Jessica Gilbert, for bringing these students together for charitable causes.

Please read on to learn more about the highlighted service programmes we will offer this term, as well as students sharing their thoughts on service and its meanings and impacts.

Yesterday evening, parents new to WIS joined us from 5 p.m. to meet with their children’s tutors, members of the PTA and Guidance and Achievement teams. It was a wonderful event, full of warmth and community spirit.  Thank you to all the parents who joined us; it was lovely to see you all.   Community events such as these are a team effort involving students, parents and teachers.  Thank you to our student ambassadors- you were fantastic as usual; Ms. Dalgarno, Mr. Jolly and all the music students for providing an impressive live soundtrack and Ms. Gilbert and our pastoral teams. Last but not least, members of the PTA committee for their support and providing delicious food and refreshments. We really do value all your contributions.

Dynasty spirit was certainly in the air today!  Students and teachers came together to join in some healthy competition in support of their dynasty.  Thank you to Mr Harding, the staff involved in all the activities, the head students and dynasty leaders for making the day such an enjoyable occasion.  The day started off with Year 7 heading to The Peak to take part in their first walk as a year group.  Year 7, your tutors have shared with me that you were ‘superstars’! Well done for being so kind to each other and representing WIS so positively.

Please take some time to read about the Dynasty Day and have a look at the photographs below.

Best regards

Clare Haworth

Service

Dynasty Day

Dynasty spirit promotes healthy, yet competitive participation, in a diverse range of experiences allowing all students equal opportunity to develop themselves outside of the classroom. They are challenged and allowed to strive towards being the best they can be. Achievement and personal fulfilment are a big part of Dynasty spirit alongside service to others whether it be supporting your own Dynasty throughout the calendar of events or contributing to our six community partners as a School. The Dynasty system is not only an opportunity to demonstrate the Learner Profile attributes but encompasses the school's values, our 5 Cs:  courage, commitment, compassion, consideration and giving back to the community. This can be seen through the leadership positions held by our Dynasty Leaders through to the students taking part in weekly Dynasty events.

Last weekend, 20 West Island School students travelled to Nord Anglia School to participate in their first Model United Nations conference of the year. Two days of intensive debate witnessed discussions on topics from the historical Cameroon crisis to Brexit and beyond. Students developed as Inquirers and Communicators building on skills we have practised during CAS sessions. Every student represented WIS with distinction, three students were awarded for their efforts, Gianni Bizos, Aastha Sethy and Nikaash Daswaaney won prizes for best speakers and best delegates.

Carrie Wong, who has worked at Wisaccino (the coffee shop) for 20 years, is leaving the school next week. Students and staff have been saying their good-byes to her.

She said she loved just about everything at the school– especially the students, teachers and staff.

“I also love the environment of the school–a lot of open space, like the 5th-floor canteen.”

“When there were music concerts or Star Search at the school, if I knew the date, I joined to listen every time. The kids were so young but they sang so well.”

The AVOHK 5km Series kicked off on Saturday, with the first of three races taking place on Bowen Road. It was terrific to see staff and students running together at this event. West were very well represented out of the 170 racers, 8 students, 4 staff members and 1 alumni/coach were competing and were very successful in highlighting the strength of the school running programme. Sahana Iyer (12S3) and Chinny Kwok (12T1)

Last Saturday, two teams from West Island School participated in the Senior Inter-ESF. Over 8 hours of intense debate, Chinny Kwok (12T1), Isaac Lau (12T3), Nicholas Lo (12T1), Hana Chow (11Y2), Alegra Baloch (11Q1), Kayle Ho (11H1), Chloe Chan (11Q1), Jennifer Kan (10H1), and Elisse Ma (11H1) engaged in 3 rounds of debate, 1 round prepared and 2 impromptu. Sahana Iyer (12S3) was one of 3 student convenors, and the Media and Communications Director, helping with score tabulation and judging.

Motions ranged from weighing the merits of political correctness to debating whether or not colonial powers should pay reparations to their former colonies, and ending with analysing the impacts of tightly integrated families.

West Island School performed outstandingly, with one of the teams placing as the 2nd best team overall, and 4 of our debaters ranking in the top 10 speakers overall, out of 50+ participants. They are:

2nd: Chinny Kwok 12T1

5th: Hana Chow 11Y2

6th: Kayle Ho 11H1

10th: Alegra Baloch 11Q1

Experienced debater Hana says “Inter-ESF senior debating competition was a fun and exhilarating experience. My teammates constantly engaged with the debate, and encouraged me, making the debate even more enjoyable. I am extremely proud of the results we were able to attain and would definitely do this again next year”. This was the first debate competition for half of our team, but they still stood their ground against tough and seasoned opponents. Novice debater Elisse said, "Inter-ESF senior debating competition was a magnificent experience overall as it encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone.”

A big thank you to Ms Goodwin and Ms Hurn for their continued support in helping us host the public speaking and debate club and supporting our debaters in their preparation for this competition.
