Principal's Message

Dear West Island community,

CAS is to start on Monday!

To quote the CAS ambassadors:"CAS is an opportunity to pursue your passions, step out of your comfort zone and develop yourself as a person." With the over 130 CAS activities to choose from, students can take charge of their own development and learning with the support of our staff and teachers.

Thank you to Ms Gigi Cheung and Ms Jessica Gilbert for putting together the CAS activities.

And for the sports team trials that have finished today, thank you to all students and PE staff for your hard work.

While we are sure that the sports teams will continue to give their best on the sports fields, some students have brought the community to attention on the topic of student athletes’ mental health. Their panel talk on mental health was held successfully last Saturday. Please read on to find out more about this talk and our students’ latest achievements and news of the week.

Last but not least, to ensure the well-being of our staff, we have implemented a new protocol regarding email communications. Staff are requested to refrain from sending emails to one another between 6 PM and 7 AM. This practice aligns with standards observed in many educational institutions and organisations.

Please be aware that if you choose to send emails in the evening, responses will be provided only during regular working hours.

Additionally, I would like to remind everyone that government schools in Hong Kong will resume on Monday. As a result, we anticipate increased traffic next week as the flow adjusts. Please take this into consideration when planning your morning commute.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Have a good weekend,

Vicki Hallatt

Principal

Panel talk on student athletes' mental health

“Beyond The Finish Line” was held on August 24th, an event hosted by The Torch (a student organization for athletes' mental health)  that is centred around feedback by over 30 different student athletes, both in high school and in university on what they wanted to learn about this identity of themselves.

The event had 2020 Tokyo Olympian Oscar Coggins, Hong Kong National Field Hockey Vice Captain Kirsten McNeil, and Founder of Inner Edge HK Karen Lo join as panellists to discuss managing our expectations in our sporting careers, whether there really a life outside of sports and if there is, how we balance it all.

Our beneficiary, KELY Support Group, were also present during the event, and all of the profits made from the fundraiser will be going directly into supporting their cause.

The event was also joined by other event partners, including Jameson Gong from Takeout Comedy HK as our event opener, YoungLife HK, and Treshire Jewellery, a small jewellery business run by WIS students Anya Chan and Alena Cheng.

The event was hugely successful, with over 80 people attending the panel discussion.

"We hope that those who were present enjoyed the insightful conversations with our panelists and event partners. Special thanks to the student volunteers who worked tirelessly in turning this event into reality."

Private music tuition

West Island School offers private tuition each week. To find out more about lessons, availability and tuition fees please contact the instrumental teacher directly. Lesson fees are paid directly to the instrumental teacher. When choosing an instrument it is important to consider the suitability and size. If you have any queries regarding choosing an appropriate instrument for your child we recommend consulting the music staff at West Island School (Ms Dalgarno, Mr Jolly) or the instrumental music teacher directly. If your child receives instrumental or voice lessons outside of school, they should consider joining a CAS music group offered at the school. The CAS opportunities offer additional value and rewarding musical experience allowing them to make faster progress.

Centre For Refugees speech

This year at WIS, we will be developing our links with our Community Partners which are local NGOs and charities that benefit from our service initiatives. One of our Community Partners is the Centre for Refugees, based in Chungking Mansions in TST. On Thursday this week, Years 12 and 13 were privileged to attend a talk from Uzma Naveed, a refugee who now works for the charity, and hear about her journey from Pakistan, where she fled religious persecution, to Hong Kong where she claimed asylum.

There are over 14,000 refugees and asylum seekers in Hong Kong, and Uzma's story taught our students the importance of compassion, empathy and understanding.

Eveline, Cassandra and Saffron in Year 12 are running the Centre for Refugees service CAS this year. This is what they had to say about the talk:

Listening to Uzma from the Centre of Refugees speak was a profound experience that gave us valuable and heartfelt insight into the lives and journeys of asylum seekers and refugees in Hong Kong. Her story, filled with resilience and hope inspires us to take action as a school, by directly and indirectly contributing to raise awareness for the situation. Meeting Uzma was extremely enlightening and eye opening, we were able to grasp the many challenges and hardships refugees are forced to face. This term by hosting our CAS experience, we hope to make a significant difference for the lives of those in the refugee community.

GAP Year presentation:

On August 28th, we were delighted to welcome Ms. Lola Richardson back to West Island School. A graduate of WIS in 2023, Lola shared her experiences about taking a gap year. Initially, she had planned to attend Bristol University. However, despite exceeding her total points requirement, she fell just 1% short in one subject grade. After a challenging few weeks, she decided to take a gap year. Lola conducted thorough research and consulted with many people before choosing to pursue a TEFL course in Guatemala. The experience proved both challenging and rewarding. She spent two months travelling around Guatemala and Belize, immersing herself in the local culture. After her travels, Lola moved to Spain, where she embraced a new lifestyle by living with a Spanish family, learning the language, and teaching English. She met incredible individuals and created lasting memories, ultimately feeling grateful for her gap year. Now, she is set to begin her studies at the University of Manchester and is excited for the next chapter in her journey! We wish her all the best and thank her for sharing her valuable experience with our students.
