Today we feature Angling Club, an activity initiated and organised by Aiden Cheng in Year 12. Not only did Aiden develop vital skills, learning how to plan and deliver a large project, the younger students who attended enjoyed developing a new hobby! Thank you to Aiden and his friends, and Ms Elaine Xu, for supporting this project. Below is what Aiden said about the club.
"Angling has been a major hobby of mine for several years, albeit somewhat atypical for other young people of my generation. I have always found angling to be extremely beneficial, helping develop patience while also being extremely rewarding when landing a large fish. Nevertheless, there was always one issue preventing beginners from getting into angling, that being the steep and frustrating learning curve which only the persistent have gotten over. It was these first frustrating experiences I had in my first hours of angling that gave me the idea to create the angling club as my CAS project,"
"I began planning the activity in the summer of 2024, starting by reading through the activity regulations and finding a supervising teacher, Ms Xu, who could attend the CAS every Friday. After I found a supervisor, I started researching as well as using my existing knowledge to list potential angling spots which were safe enough to bring the participants to, this involved creating risk assessments with Ms Gilbert. I also created sample theory lesson materials to create a feel for what the teaching side of the activity might look like. When term 1 began I started creating my team for the project, it was this team which proved crucial in helping to make large decisions as well as helping with creating lesson materials and aiding the participants. Lastly, all that was left was to pitch my ideas for the project to Ms Gilbert, during which I made sure to display the preparation my team and I had made in order to prove that we were responsible enough to run it,"
"Over the course of this project I have developed my leadership and organisational skills as I directed my team, giving detailed instructions for their roles and responsibilities and leading by example. Participants of the activity also benefited, gaining the opportunity to experience a new hobby and receive advice and guidance from experienced leaders, they also had the opportunity to develop skills like perseverance and patience which are a natural part of angling."
