Student reporter Sya Ang (Year 8) interviewed Mr James Playford, Head of Technology Faculty, about Year 11 GCSE Product Design students this year, as well as two students about their latest designs. Please read her story below about how these creative products were brought into being.
This year, the Year 11 GCSE Product Design students have created products including an eczema reliever, a dismentable dollhouse, a bubble tea holder and a toy that includes multiple games in one.
Product Design teacher Mr Playford said: “My favourite part (of the design process) is what we call the design development section. That's where students are making models, physical models and CAD models, to solve all the problems they've got and to really resolve their design before they start making the final one.”
Dismantable dollhouse
Aniece Chan decided to make a dollhouse for her sister, as she really liked dollhouses.
“I think that Hong Kong apartments are really, really small,” she said.
“So, I decided to make a dollhouse that can be transported around the house and can be dismantled so we can save space around the house.”
Aniece said there were constraints on the size of the base she could have for the dollhouse, due to the limited space in the apartment.
“There were a lot of constraints on the size of the base that I can create, so I decided to make it higher, to solve this issue.”
Eczema reliever
Jenson Chu created an eczema reliever for his brother to help with severe eczema. The product stores items to alleviate itchiness and includes a distraction device to reduce scratching, aiming to boost confidence and self-esteem.
However, the initial design was too heavy for long-term outdoor use, so Jenson needed to make it lightweight and durable.
Jenson said he was pleased with the final product, but time constraints prevented adding more personal designs. The product solved most issues, but it tilted forward when worn. So he suggested adding a top strap to fix this.
