                       Dear West Island community,

As we get closer to the end of the term, we keep up the momentum of learning, both locally and overseas, through our Horizons Week. Students involved in local trips were bathed in sunshine and treated to clear blue skies. Whatever and wherever the activity, our amazing young people, supported and encouraged by teaching and support staff, embodied the attribute of being risk-takers.

To all students, whether you were helping to improve a school building in Thailand, learning a new craft such as photography or songwriting in school, coaching younger students or experiencing what Hong Kong has to offer, we applaud all of you for the courage to seize this week’s opportunity to develop your skills, overcome challenges, support your fellow students and make an impact within the community you have worked alongside.

Listening to what some of you have shared with us, it is evident you have learned invaluable lessons unique to each and every one of you. These included cultural appreciation, gratitude, being caring, overcoming fears outdoors, engaging in open and different interactions, exploring new possibilities and roles, developing different ways of thinking, discovering new talents, and developing a greater appreciation for diversity. On top of that, we heard from you that new connections of knowledge budded, friendships flourished, and well-rounded perspectives were formed.

Your feedback truly reflects the meaning and purpose behind Horizons Week, which has been echoed by CAS & Horizons Week Coordinator Ms Jessica Gilbert:

It is a manifestation of West Island School's mission of creating exceptional learning opportunities that emphasise achievement, personal fulfilment, service to others, learning skills and responsible global citizenship. We value the holistic development of our students and are proud to see them embracing the various opportunities that have been on offer. Horizons Week is a reminder that skills can be learnt beyond a classroom, and the experiences and memories that are made during this week can stay with the students for a lifetime.”

Community members, please read on to find out what our students across all year groups said about their chosen activity, trip or course this past week .A special thank you to Ms Gigi Cheung, our CAS Administrator, for her months of logistical work that have made a week of adventure possible for our students.

Have a lovely weekend.

ESF is an official supporting organisation of the Weez Walk 2024. This annual fundraising event is close to the heart of our community as it was set up in memory of Jamie Bruno, one of our students. Jamie died by suicide in 2017 when he was 15 years old, and his parents founded the Weez Walk to raise awareness about the warning signs of a potential suicide to help prevent tragedy. The event name is also a tribute to Jamie, who loved street art and used "Weez" as his graffiti art signature.

The Weez Walk route follows the 60km coastal trail around Hong Kong Island and can be completed in one go or many shorter stages during the event period, from 20 January until 25 February.

Registration is now open with a special discount before 30 November. All proceeds will fund the suicide prevention programme of youth services charity KELY Support Group. Let's show our full support and help make this event a huge success. You can sign up here.
