Principal's Message

Dear West Island community,

In this week’s newsletter, we want to highlight a group of ten students who have grown and shown their entrepreneurial abilities in a South Island School business competition, as well as another Year 13 BTEC student’s story on successfully opening her own baking business.

Through being risk-takers, they have stretched their limits in what they are capable of achieving, both individually and collaboratively. We hope their stories inspire not only those students interested in the area of business, but also encourage other students to take a risk and try something new, explore different areas and pursue activities they are passionate about.

Please read on for these students sharing about what they have learned in their pursuits, along with some news and spotlights around the school over the week.

Last but not least, to Year 13 students and parents - wishing you a great night of celebration at the graduation formal tonight.

Have a lovely weekend.

Higher Education and Careers

Many students at WIS sit the PSAT every year. Michelle Shen, as an eligible US citizen, sat the PSAT in Yr12 in Oct ‘22. Michelle scored in the top 0.5% of all test takers in the international region, and was recognized as a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist. She submitted additional documentation and was recognized as a National Merit Scholar Finalist. 15,000 students receive this honor out of 1.6 million applicants. National Merit Scholar Finalists are eligible for 100% scholarships at 22 US universities.

Year 9

On June 7th, the Higher Education team will be hosting a Careers Fair for all students in Year 9. This is a great opportunity for our Year 9 students to explore different career pathways as they start to think about their future.

The Careers Fair will feature guests from a variety of industries and different career paths. Students will be able to speak directly with these representatives and learn about the qualifications and skills needed for different careers.

This is a mandatory event. It's never too early to start thinking about your future career, and this event can help provide valuable insights and information.

We will share more details with students closer to the date.

ESF Art Exhibition

Striking self-portraits, bold murals and powerful collaborative sculptures - these are just some of the amazing student creations featured in our upcoming ESF Art Exhibition 2024, which takes place at Hong Kong City Hall from 29 May until 2 June.

This year’s theme - Faster, Higher, Stronger - was inspired by the upcoming Paris Olympics and is all about humans and their extraordinary power to achieve and strive to be the best they can be.

In response to this thought-provoking theme, our talented children have created an outstanding collection of artworks spanning an impressive range of mediums such as painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and mixed media.

Each piece on display not only reflects how our students feel about motivation, participation, dedication, teamwork and achievement but also their great skill and passion for art.

Our students wrote personal reflections to accompany their incredible artwork. We are including a few heartwarming examples below:

Our exceptional art teachers play a pivotal role in this exhibition, not only inspiring and guiding our students to create wonderfully expressive pieces but also supporting with everything from the initial submissions to the final curation process.

ESF Island School visual arts teacher Carmen Woods says: “Having work on show at the ESF Art Exhibition is an outstanding experience for our students and one they will never forget. Hong Kong City Hall is a highly prestigious arts venue, and knowing thousands of people will visit our exhibition has got everyone feeling incredibly excited, and the buzz is growing as the opening gets closer.”

Zena Deal, a teacher at ESF Wu Kai Sha International Kindergarten, told us: “In response to the theme, we encouraged our students to think about the people who supported them in going faster and higher and being stronger. They talked about their teachers which made us smile and also their family and their friends.

We then worked together and made lots of small clay statues of people, an idea inspired by Anthony Gormley’s sculpture Field. It has been a fun and engaging project and I know the whole community are really looking forward to celebrating our students’ creativity at this fantastic exhibition.”

So Fan Man, who teaches art at Kennedy School, told us that her students really enjoyed getting creative around this year’s theme. She said: “I have been so impressed by our amazing students who have put so much thought and feeling into their artwork.

The theme of Faster, Higher, Stronger has really made our children think about the people who love, support and encourage them to be the best they can be and it has been wonderful to see them creating such beautiful pieces about the important people in their lives. We are all so proud of them and can’t wait to see their work showcased at the City Hall."

The details of the exhibition are summarised below. If you have a question, comment below and we’ll share the answer as soon as possible.
