Visual Arts Department

Dear West Island community,

We were delighted to see so many of you support our WIS Bazaar last Saturday. Community spirit shone through the rain and it was heartening to see students, staff, families and friends of WIS enjoying all that the Bazaar had to offer. It was a huge success and it wouldn't have been possible without all of you

For those parents, staff and students who volunteered, the 2024 WIS Bazaar organising committee would like to thank you for giving of your time leading up to the event or helping out on the day. Through your efforts, we enjoyed delicious food from the international food court, cake and coffee, purchased items from our pre-loved book and toy stall or from our commercial vendors, had fun at the beauty stalls, VR games, inflatables, or enjoyed a moment of quietness and relaxation in our newly introduced Zen Zone. All these wonderful activities came into shape through close collaboration between the PTA and our wonderful school.

Thank you to the PTA committee for working so hard for the last few months coordinating this whole school fundraising event. All your efforts are appreciated and valued by the school community.

Today is World Book Day, with inter-dynasty competitions, creative character costumes and school-wide reading time. Please read on for the character dress-up photos, what students have to say about World Book Day, as well as some year 7 students' analysis of how The Hunger Games' characters show IB Learner Profile attributes.

Finally, with two weeks to go until the Easter break, as is usual at the end of each term, we will finish at the end of period three on Friday 22 March. School buses will depart at 12.30 pm and there will be no CAS activities.

Best wishes

Clare Haworth

Interim Principal

We were thrilled to have representatives from Huron University, University of Victoria, McMaster University, and the University of Guelph join us on Thursday, 07 March. The primary objective of this event was to offer students a special chance to directly engage and interact with these esteemed university representatives. It provided an invaluable opportunity for students to learn more about these institutions, ask questions, and gain insights into various academic programs, campus life, and admission requirements. The event aimed to empower students in making informed decisions about their higher education options by connecting them directly with representatives from these universities.

Year 13

Our students are receiving conditional offers from universities in the UK, New Zealand, Hong Kong, the US, and other countries.

Year 12

The Higher Education team has commenced careers lessons with the Year 12 students. These lessons are conducted once per cycle and are designed to support and prepare students for their university applications and the transition from high school to post-secondary.

Cycle 1 - we introduced the students to the department, provided them with the timeline for Years 12 and 13, outlined the objectives of the course, and discussed how to research universities and courses. The slides have been shared with students via Google Classroom and to parents by email.

Cycle 2 - we gave an overview of international applications, the application procedure, and platforms and ways to research for countries such as The UK, US, Hong Kong, and Canada.

Cycle 3 - we introduced students to choosing universities and factors to consider when choosing one. We also introduced them to the Reach-Match-Safety strategy.

Cycle 4 - students used the Reach-Match-Safety strategy and worked on their university list.

Cycle 5 - students have been introduced to the concept of a brag sheet and its various elements.

The Higher Education team supports students with applications to all countries. Students are requested to reach out to their Higher Education Counsellors for any advice or support required.

The Higher Education team is now in the process of scheduling meetings with the Year 12 students to discuss their university applications and their university list.

Year 11

The Higher Education team is currently in the process of completing all meetings with the Year 11 students and families regarding the post-16 options choices. An email will be sent to students and families shortly, providing information on this matter and requesting confirmation of their post-16 options. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please reach out to your HE counsellor.

Year 7 to year 13

On Thursday, 07 March, the HE Department organized the first session of "Coffee and College." This session focused on providing valuable information about strategies to finance education in US universities. Participants were presented with helpful content on various methods to pay for their college expenses. Following the informative session, a Q&A session was conducted, allowing attendees to ask questions and seek clarification on any concerns they may have had. Please find the link to the slides “HERE” and the recording of the event “HERE”. When viewing the video, it is a bit challenging to see the slides on the projection screen, so you will want to view the slides while listening to the presentation.
